Antique 17th Century Stuart Crystal Pendant Charm Dangler
The House of Stuart ruled the United Kingdom from 1603, when King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England as well and united both kingdoms. The Stuart Era ended in 1714 with a death of Queen Anne. They were tumultuous years in the history of the UK with war, plague and intense and violent political and religious upheaval. The dramatic death by execution of King Charles I marked the creation of Stuart Crystal jewellery, worn in silent support of King Charles and in mourning of his death. Love tokens made in the same fashion followed.
Our 17th Century Stuart Crystal pendant dates from the late 17th Century, around 1680-1700. It started life as, by now a lonesome single button and has been expertly converted to a pendant with 9 karat rose gold loop and bale. It is shaped as a slightly irregular square cushion. The rock crystal has lovely square facets and it is set on pinky red foil, That particular pinky red is a classic 17th century creation. Many Stuart Crystals had gold wirework initials set above the foil while this one is plain - and we love this about it. It is bezel set in high domed setting, as was the style at the time.
The pendant is made of silver, it is not hallmarked and has been tested. The rock crystal measures 11.9 by 11.7 mm, the pendant with the bale is 18.2 mm long and it weighs 1.8 grams. There is a little bit of nibbling around the edges of the crystal and faint rubbing to the facets, visible with the jewellers loupe only and some discolouration to the foil, all commensurate with the age of the pendant. There is also a small, lighter area at the back where the button fixture was attached, this is bound to even out as it acquires some more patina on the silver. As this lovely piece is close to being 350 years old we are delighted it survived in such good antique condition.
This gorgeous Stuart pendant will make the perfect addition to a collection of early jewellery but can be worn and enjoyed too. It looks fantastic on a slim velvet or lace ribbon, a chain or suspended from a dog clip of an Albert chain.
We love ..... this early piece for the connection to the history of the United Kingdom of Scotland and England. And really love its quirky shape and nostalgic kind of simple elegance.
