Antique Austro-Hungarian Rose Cut Diamond Dormeuse Earrings

These magnificent rose cut diamond dormeuse earrings hail from the 1870's Austro Hungarian Empire. 

They impress with the stunning oval Amsterdam cut rose cut diamonds, measuring 0.32 by 0.25 and 0.35 by 0.27 inches. We estimate the diamonds to be around 1.00 carat each. These antique gemstones are in closed back foiled settings, enhancing their beauty with the gentle moon-like sparkle. The stones have three tiny nibbles between them around the bezel and we feel that they originally had these already when they were set into the earrings. They don't show unless you use strong magnification. One of the diamonds has a small inclusion also, similarly, not visible without a loupe.

The settings are shaped like a spray of gold rays, very stylish and very Austro-Hungary of the times. The twinkly, soft moonlight grey of the diamonds gains this moody colour from the foiling underneath. It contrasts with the matt, rich gold of the settings. The earrings are hand fashioned in 18 carat gold and are fully hallmarked with an Austrian dog and a figure 4, for 18 carat gold, used within the Empire from 1867 to 1922. There are joined letters AV as well, which look somewhat as a stylized letter N, which is an Austro-Hungarian import mark. They had been gilded and you can see the tiniest difference in the colour due to tarnish but only at the back and most certainly not when worn. The earrings measure 0.87 inches in length and 0.52 inches in width, making them sizeable and certainly very noticeable, especially that they feature such large diamonds. They weigh 5 grams together. Everything about them is bold and fabulously elegant, simple, yet wonderfully effective. They sit under the ear lobe and are so flattering with any face shape or hair colour. You get the movement, which brings the diamonds to life but they are not long earrings by any means, making them great for day and evening.
