Antique Continental 0.40 Ct Diamond Dormeuse Earrings

Old cut diamond dormeuses are incredibly desirable and you can easily see why. If we had to choose just one piece of jewellery to own, it would be a pair of these! You will never stop loving them. They are an antique equivalent of the modern diamond stud earrings, just as versatile but even more flattering, sitting just under your earlobe and framing your face in a beautiful, sparkly way. They are timeless.
The earrings are antique and of German origin, hand crafted around 1890-1900. The hallmark on them, "835", only one partially visible and clear enough to read refers to the settings of the diamonds made in German 835 fitness silver (835 parts out of a 1000). We tested the ear fittings and rose gold parts of the earrings and they test 14 karat gold. The other hallmark is too rubbed to read and may have referred to the 585 gold content, as only the bottom parts of digit 5 and 8 are visible. The style of the earrings rounded silver settings is classically Austro-Hungarian and so they may come from the German territories close to Austria.
The old mine cut diamonds are stunning and date from the 19th century, with an estimated G-H colour. They are beautifully cut, and so super sparkly and eye clean. The larger diamonds are estimated to weigh 0.36 carats together, while the smaller 0.2 carats each, so the estimated total weight is around 0.40 carats. The earrings measure 16.36 mm from the top of the hook to the bottom of the earrings, while the two-diamond section is 8.66 mm long. Their max width, so the width of the bottom colets is 5.98 mm. There are tiny, fraction of a millimetre gaps in the front of the settings, a common way of setting stones in this style of antique, hand crafted earrings. They weigh a super comfortable 2.3 grams together. They have secure lever back fittings and are in great antique condition, as you can see in our photos.
