Antique Indian Mughal Diamond & Enamel Heart Pendant
This antique Mughal heart is just sensational... So full of love, colour and life! We have seen Mughal bracelets and pendants in the past but never a heart!! The Mughal Dynasty ruled India from 1526 until 1857. The times of expansion of the Mughal Empire both in lands, riches and influence brought with it such wonders of art and architecture such as the Taj Mahal, fabulous miniature paintings and the richest, most opulent of jewels.
Our double sided, richly decorated heart pendant was made around 1830. We had it professionally tested as we did not want to acid test it, not to disturb the enamel work. It is testing as 18-22 karat gold. The electronic gun testing of enamel pieces is not exact on enamel pieces as the enamel content lowers the gold content reading, so we can safely presume that the gold content is in fact 20-22 karat.
One side of the heart features exquisite and fine floral enamel decorations in red, green and blue, while the other shows a beautiful heart studded in early rose cut diamonds, surrounded by a frame of red hearts on white background in enamel work. Both sides of the pendant are equally stunning, so we find it impossible to decide which we should call front and which reverse! The bale is also enamelled on one side and set with a lovely, red glass stone on the other. A lovely natural baroque pearl and a red glass bead drop finish the look perfectly.
The heart herself measures 17.03 mm x 14 mm x 4.55 mm. The length of heart with the original bale is 23.52 mm and the total length of the pendant is 40.50 mm. She weighs 7.2 grams. As you see in our photos there is some damage to the enamel on the sides of the pendant, which we decided not to restore and leave in it's present condition. The enamel is stable as is, does not have damage to the main parts of the pendant and hence is not noticeable when worn. We think that sometimes it is more fitting to leave an old gem as is, the little faults a testament to her rich history and life well lived! Otherwise this gorgeous heart is in lovely antique condition.
