Antique Victorian Blue Enamel Diamond Mourning Conversion Evil Eye Pendant

Antique Victorian Blue Enamel Diamond Mourning Conversion Evil Eye Pendant

£3,440.00Price

What do you think of our stunning enamel and diamond pendant? The deep cobalt blue enamel with a slightest hint of purple, buttery yellow gold sculpted surround, the most delightful, tiny old mine cut diamonds in a miniature, fine three leaf clover design around the central, eye shaped rock crystal dome. So fine and super cute ! She reminds us of an evil eye or a lover's eye .... which one are you seeing??

This late Georgian / early Victorian 15 karat gold beauty, originally a brooch, dates back to 1837 England - the first year of Queen Victoria's reign ! However, she was most likely made shortly before this date. Mourning jewellery was pre-ordered and pre-made then. Custom dictated that the women of the family of the departed were given mourning rings or brooches at the time of the funeral. Mourning jewellery was big business then, the mourning protocol strict and prescribed. The mourners clothes, the colours and types of fabric they were allowed to wear and the jewellery was strictly controlled by society's standards. The mourning was divided into three distinct periods, first no jewellery allowed, second - black and jet only and the third period where purples and blues, pearls and some diamonds were permitted. The inscription at the back states "John Saunderson died 20th September 1837 aged 65". It means this jewel was made for a mourner for John in the third stage of mourning. Unfortunately we can't find any information on John, not one detail, but as you can see from the opulent and expensive mourning piece for him he must have been a wealthy man.

The brooch fitting has now been removed and bale added. The enamel part of the pendant measures 44.22 by 35.72 mm excluding the bale. Her total length with the bale is 48.3 mm and she weighs a whooping 19 grams. She is in wonderful antique condition, we only can see a small enamel repair on the bottom left edge by the diamond eye section and a tiny nick on the enamel at the top - you can barely see either, especially when worn. The colour of the enamel is deeper than showing in the photos - she was quite tricky to photograph. A much deeper cobalt blue... it's delicious. You'll just have to trust us on this one. Also, there was a little lock of hair underneath the rock crystal central panel, not in great condition so we removed it and had it foiled, which created a moonstone like effect for the eye.

We love .... this gorgeous antique jewel, previously a tribute, now a diamond eye. We hope you love her too !!
