Antique Victorian Dendritic Agate Pendant Charm Dangler

Ancient civilisations used agate stones as amulets for protection and healing. Dendritic agate, also known as tree agate is considered to be a stone of abundance. It is also a symbol of Greek dryads, the goddesses of trees, of woodland and tree spirits.

Agate is a variety of quartz and it has been used widely in jewellery as a semi precious stone. As it is formed by the deposition of silica from groundwater into igneous rocks it comes in variety of colours and patterns. Hard stone cameos are carved out of agate where the layers of colours allow for the carvings to have a dual tone. There is moss agate, banded agate, dendritic agate......the nature creates the most wonderful of art. 

This Victorian pendant, hand crafted around 1880- 1890 is simple and understated in design. Eight prong setting in 15 karat buttery yellow gold holds a trapezoid oval agate, typical of the Continental European jewels of Victorian era. The pendant is not hallmarked and has been tested for gold content. The original, smaller bale has been changed for a 9 karat gold, larger one in matching gold colour. It can now be worn on thicker chains as well as the dog clips of your Albert chains.

The agate in its setting measures 11.0 by 9.5 mm and it is polished smooth and flat. The total length of the pendant with the bale is 18.0 mm and it weighs 1.63 grams. Both the agate and the pendent are in very good antique condition.
