Art Deco Enamel Masonic Flip Signet Ring

A fabulous find - an early Art Deco Masonic flip signet ring ! 

The square and compass tools which you often see on Masonic gems became the main symbol for the Masonic Order. Even though these tools are what stonemasons actually used in their trade, they also symbolise so much more than that. The square for a Freemason represents "treating people equally and fairly" and reminds them to do so in their day to day! The compass reminds them of the "boundary of their (our) day-to-day lives" so they stay on a good path in life.

We love the gorgeous shape of this heirloom ring. Made in solid gold it has smooth, rounded off edges and feels luxuriously weighty at 7.5 grams. It was hand crafted in Birmingham, England in 1921 in yellow gold. The ring is fully hallmarked with "9" and ".375" for English 9 karat gold. It is also stamped with letter "W" and Birmingham anchor mark, meaning it was assayed in 1921 in Birmingham. There is a maker's mark also, "JH&S", a Hatton Garden jewellers called Joshua Horton and Son. 

The centre of the ring flips so you can wear it with enamel square and compass or the reverse, the initial side up. The enamel is a lovely deep cobalt blue in fantastic condition and a lovely engraved square and compass - the reverse features beautifully engraved "GB" initials. The face of the ring measures 14.25 by 12.6 mm and the back of the band is 4 mm wide. The ring is size US 8 7/8 or UK R1/2 and re-sizeable. It is in a lovely antique condition, with just the right and very desirable amount of wear. After all we want that heirloom look from our antique gems !
