Fabulous Antique Rose Cut Diamond Butterfly Pendant Brooch Pin

Butterflies are a symbol of transformation, from plain caterpillar to the most magnificent creature of breathtaking beauty. We too have the same cycles of transformation and we love how butterflies symbolise this for us. We love what this gorgeous, glittering creature says to us - keep transforming and growing through this beautiful journey called life !

This absolutely exquisite diamond butterfly dates to around 1870, most likely Continental Europe. It is not hallmarked and testing reveals it is hand crafted in 18 karat gold with silver settings for all the gems. There is a mixture of stunning old mine cut and rose cut diamonds and they are delicious ! Especially that oval, largest Amsterdam cut rose cut diamond, it is just beautiful !! The diamonds are estimated to weigh approximately 2.5 carats in total and his eyes are little cabochon cut rubies. The rose cut diamonds are set in closed back foiled settings while the old mine cut diamonds are in open back settings. This makes them fire their glittering beauty in the best possible way both in natural and artificial light, also by candlelight. The reverse of the butterfly is equally stunning, with such phenomenal workmanship and attention to detail - always a hallmark of the best quality jewellery there is. 

We purchased him as a brooch with a removable fitting, meaning that he might have been originally in a set as a tiara centrepiece. You can still wear him as a brooch, but we asked our amazing jeweller to add a wee little half moon shaped 9 karat gold bale and jump rings so that he can also be worn as a pendant. To wear him as a pendant the brooch fitting can easily be taken off by unscrewing it from the butterflie's body. When you want him as a brooch the pendant fitting will neatly fall at the back so that it is not visible at all. Please take a look at our photos to see how this works and looks. The butterfly measures 24.2 by 40.9 mm excluding the pendant bale. Measured with the bale it is 33 mm long. It weighs 8.1 grams as a pendant with additional 2 grams for the brooch fitting, so 10.1 grams in total. There is a little old repair on the back, other than that the butterfly is in lovely antique condition.
