Stunning Art Deco No Heat Ceylon Star Sapphire Platinum Heavy Man's Gypsy Ring

Absolutely stunning - this Art Deco era purple star sapphire ring ! How we love those gems, they have electric lightning energy inside them !!

This exquisite ring hails from 1920's, designed as a high domed gypsy ring to accentuate a lovely, torpedo shape of the cabochon sapphire. The super heavy and solid platinum mount is a perfectly cool setting for the purple gem. The mount is hallmarked with "10%IRIDPLAT" meaning it is 90 % iridium and 90 percent platinum.

The jewel has been tested and is sold with a certificate stating it is a "natural purple star sapphire with no evidence of heat treatment observed, origin Sri Lanka" (Ceylon at the time ring was made). The colour purple shows up in darker and lighter shades throughout the stone and displays asterism. Asterism means a star pattern, which is found inside the stone. Its colour changes slightly from pinkish purple to bluish purple under different light conditions as you can see in our photos. Both ruby and sapphire are the same mineral, corundum and it is the amount of chromium in the stone that determines whether it is officially classified as a ruby or sapphire - this gorgeous one falls into purple sapphire classification. 

The sapphire measures 9 by 8.5 mm with a depth of 6.2 mm approximately and it is estimated to weigh 5.10 carats. The face of the ring measures 11.63 mm north to south and 24.67 mm side to side, looking from the top. The ring sits 10.42 mm off the top of your finger. It weighs a whooping 23.31 grams and is in lovely antique condition. It size US US 10 1/4 - 10 1/2 or UK U-U 1/2. It can be sized up or down a little bit but not substantial amounts, please check with us before purchase.
